1. What is a Vig Calculator?

A vig calculator measures the margin a sportsbook has built into the odds for a betting market.

Vig — also known as juice, sportsbook margin or overround — causes the implied probabilities of all possible outcomes to add up to more than 100%.

Enter the odds for every outcome in the same market and the calculator will show:

  • The implied probability of each outcome
  • The total market percentage
  • The sportsbook's vig or margin

A lower vig generally means less sportsbook margin is built into the market.

2. What is Vig in Sports Betting?

Vig, short for vigorish, is the margin built into sportsbook odds.

For example, a typical two-way market may be priced at -110 on both sides.

Each side has an implied probability of approximately 52.38%:

52.38% + 52.38% = 104.76%

The market therefore has an overround of 4.76% above the theoretical 100% fair market.

This extra percentage represents the sportsbook margin built into the prices.

What Our Experts Say

"Many casual bettors don’t realize that vig can silently chip away at profits over time. Spotting inflated margins early - especially in two-way markets - is essential if you want to build a sustainable and data-driven betting approach."

3. How to Use a Vig Calculator

  1. Choose your odds format – American, decimal or fractional.
  2. Enter every possible outcome from the same sportsbook market.
  3. Calculate the market percentage – the calculator converts each price into implied probability and adds them together.
  4. Check the vig – any percentage above 100% represents the market overround or sportsbook margin.
  5. Compare markets – you can use the result to compare how much margin different sportsbooks have built into similar markets.

Always use odds from the same market at approximately the same time. Mixing prices from different markets can produce a misleading result.

Fact: How much vig the sportsbook is charging can also be worked out by adding together the implied probabilities of each potential outcome of the game, then subtracting 100 from that. Implied probabilities can be calculated using an implied probability calculator

4. The Vig Formula: How is Vig Calculated?

For a complete betting market:

Vig = Total Implied Probability − 100%

For example, with -110 / -110 odds:

52.38% + 52.38% = 104.76%

104.76% − 100% = 4.76% vig

For a two-way market using decimal odds:

Vig = (1 ÷ Odds A) + (1 ÷ Odds B) − 1

The calculator performs this automatically.

Converting American Odds to Implied Probability

American Odds Implied Probability Formula Example Calculation Implied Probability (%)
Positive (+) 100 / (Odds + 100) +150 → 100 / (150 + 100) = 0.4 40%
Negative (-) Odds / (Odds + 100) -200 → 200 / (200 + 100) = 0.66 66.67%

Note: Implied probability represents the sportsbook’s estimated chance of an event occurring, factoring in vig.

Now you know the vig formula, here's how it's calculated:

  1. Convert the odds for the two possible outcomes (e.g., Team A and Team B winning) into their respective decimal odds format if they are in a different format, such as American odds (+150, -200), fractional odds (3/2, 1/2), or any other format.

  2. Plug these decimal odds into the formula.

  3. Subtract 1 from the result to get the vig.

📈
What The Data Says

"In a standard -110/-110 market, sportsbooks hold a 4.8% edge before the game even begins, meaning bettors must win 52.4% of the time to break even."

- Action Network

5.  Is Lower Vig Better?

Generally, lower vig means a sportsbook is taking less margin from the market, which can result in more competitive prices for bettors.

However, there is no single percentage that counts as “good vig” across every sport or market. Vig can vary depending on:

  • The sportsbook
  • Sport and league
  • Market type
  • Market liquidity
  • How close the event is to starting

The most useful approach is to compare the margin of equivalent markets across sportsbooks.

Common Vig Percentages and What They Mean

Vig Percentage Description Bettor Impact
0% No Vig / Fair Odds Ideal — true fair odds, no sportsbook margin
1% to 2% Very Low Vig Excellent value, rare to find
2% to 5% Typical Market Range Reasonable vig, acceptable for most bettors
5% to 7% Higher Vig Less favorable; profits harder to achieve
Above 7% High Vig / Juice Poor value, significantly reduces profitability

6. Vig vs. Juice: Understanding the Difference

Yes. Vig, vigorish and juice are commonly used to describe the margin built into sportsbook odds.

Overround or sportsbook margin are also closely related terms and refer to the amount by which the combined implied probabilities exceed 100%.

7. Vig Calculator vs No-Vig Calculator

A Vig Calculator tells you how much sportsbook margin is built into a market.

A No-Vig Calculator goes one step further by removing that margin and estimating fair-market probabilities and odds.

In simple terms:

Vig Calculator = measure the sportsbook margin.

No-Vig Calculator = remove the sportsbook margin.

FAQs on the Vig Calculator

What does a vig calculator calculate?
A vig calculator measures how much sportsbook margin is built into the odds for a complete betting market.

How do you calculate sportsbook vig?
Convert every outcome into implied probability, add the probabilities together and subtract 100%. The amount above 100% is the market overround or vig.

What is vig on -110 odds?
In a two-way -110/-110 market, both sides imply approximately 52.38%, giving a combined market percentage of 104.76% and an overround of approximately 4.76%.

Is vig the same as juice?
Yes. Vig and juice are commonly used interchangeably to describe the margin built into sportsbook odds.

Is lower vig better for bettors?
Generally, lower vig means less sportsbook margin is built into the odds, although margins vary significantly between sports and market types.

What is the difference between vig and no-vig odds?
Vig measures the sportsbook margin. No-vig odds are calculated after that margin has been removed to estimate fair-market prices.
